I'll be stumped if I know how I managed to do this, as it was not my usual method of digital painting. I started with black and white, then added colour. Which I now know I really don't starting a painting that way. It's good to make sure your values are awesome and whatnot, but I like my colour. Anyway, so it was mostly just a hodgepodge of slapping colour down, then painting on the top layer as usual. Although even that was different , I had my brush at a lower opacity than normal.
I did start the painting with the intention of doing realism, so I suppose that helped me out. And, get this, I was actually thinking about all the thing I'd learned. I was thinking about the light, the values, the anatomy, the colours, how to do the mane all proper etc. I was actually dredging up information about things I'd learned, then applying it to what I was doing. I'm learning!! This is a happy day for me :'D It's almost like validation that all my work is going to pay off in the end.
Well. I'm uber proud of this. So I hope you all enjoy it too
'Bout 5 hours, mebbe more
Oh I forgot, my reference was from [link] And in-case your wondering, I didn't set out to copy the photo exact. It was in a similar pose to what I wanted, so it became reference. Really helped too, especially with the nose and the eye. I did have a ref for the mane too, but I'll be blowed if I knew where I got it from.
It really does look absolutely great, you could just reach out and pet her. And the way you did the colors looks amazing. How did you apply the colors? Low transparent layers on top of the black and white?
I can see why you're proud of this and so you should be, it's incredible. The mane is very nice and flows so naturally and the eyes and face are so beautiful and calm well done!
Thanks
Very well done and I want to see more *_*
